What is Image to Text OCR?

OCR (Optical Character Recognition) reads the letters and words inside a picture and turns them into text you can copy, search, and edit - instead of a flat image you can only look at. This is useful whenever you have a photo, screenshot, or scan of something with text in it and need that text in a usable form: a screenshot of an important message, a photographed page from a book, a scanned certificate, or a picture of a whiteboard.

The recognition engine runs entirely in your browser. Your image is analysed locally and the extracted text appears in a text box you can copy - nothing is uploaded to a server at any point.

Common Use Cases

SituationWhat OCR gives you
Photo of a printed certificate or marksheetEditable, searchable text of the content
Screenshot of an important WhatsApp or email messageCopyable text instead of an unsearchable image
Scanned old document or noticeDigital text you can save, search, or translate
Photo of a book page or printed articleText you can paste into a note or document
Business card or ID card photoQuickly extract a name, number, or address

Step-by-Step Guide

1Prepare a clear image

Take a photo or screenshot with the text facing upright, well-lit, and in focus. Avoid glare, shadows, and extreme angles for the best accuracy.

2Upload the image

Click "Choose Image" and select your JPG, PNG, or WebP file. The tool loads it directly in your browser.

3Click Extract Text

On the first run, the OCR engine downloads to your browser (a few seconds). It then scans the image and detects text regions.

4Copy the result

The recognized text appears in an editable box. Select and copy it, or make small corrections if any characters were misread.

Tip: If your photo is a phone scan of a physical document, run it through the Document Scanner first to sharpen contrast and straighten the page - this significantly improves OCR accuracy.
Note: Handwritten text, cursive fonts, and heavily stylized text are harder for OCR to read accurately compared to standard printed fonts.

Frequently Asked Questions

How accurate is the OCR text extraction?
Accuracy depends on image quality. Sharp, well-lit images with clear printed text typically achieve 95%+ accuracy. Handwritten text, low-resolution scans, and skewed photos reduce accuracy - use the Document Scanner to improve contrast first.
Does the OCR tool support Hindi or other Indian languages?
This tool is optimized for English text recognition. Regional language scripts may not be recognized reliably. For best results, use images containing clear English printed text.
Is my image uploaded to a server for processing?
No. The OCR engine runs entirely inside your browser after an initial one-time download. Your image is never uploaded, stored, or seen by anyone at PDF Vault.
Why does the first OCR run take longer than the second?
The first extraction downloads the OCR recognition engine to your browser, which can take a few seconds depending on your connection. Subsequent extractions on the same page load are much faster since the engine is already cached.
