Why Indian PDFs are password protected
Banks and government institutions protect PDF downloads to prevent tampering and to confirm the document's origin. The password is usually your personal identifier — date of birth, PAN, or name — so only the account holder can open it. The problem is that government portals and employers often require you to upload these documents, but a locked PDF cannot be compressed or merged first.

The password is usually also stated in the email or SMS that delivered the PDF. Check there first.
How to unlock a password-protected PDF — step by step
1Find the correct password
Use the table above or check the delivery email/SMS. For e-Aadhaar: first 4 letters of your name in CAPS + birth year (e.g. RAHU1998). For HDFC/ICICI statements: date of birth in DDMMYYYY. The tool requires you to know the password — it does not crack or guess it.

Compress for portal upload: Bank statements are typically 1–3MB. Use Compress PDF or PDF Size Fixer to bring the unlocked file within your portal's limit (e.g. 300KB for UPSC, 500KB for SSC).
Merge multiple documents: Unlock each file separately, then use Merge PDF to combine them into one PDF for submission.

What this tool cannot do
Unlock PDF removes password protection only when you provide the correct password. It cannot recover or guess an unknown password.
